Berlin Highlights: East Wall Gallery

The longest strip of wall still standing is the east wall open air gallery. The wall is now covered in amazing art done as a memorial and tribute to freedom. These paintings of varied styles are impressive on their own, but even more powerful set on the canvas of what was a means of suppressing freedom and expression. Right off the subway line, you can take a walk and see some truly amazing art so connected to Berlin’s culture and history. Unfortunately, given that it is open along the sidewalk, so many have tagged and signed along the wall. It was really tough on me seeing names tagged from last year’s vacation on such a huge piece of history. It is so disrespectful to me to deface something so incredible- but it is rare enough still that it doesn’t interfere with the experience. Maybe others have differing, more accepting opinions on this. It is definitely a sight worth seeing and not to be missed when in Berlin.

I too am saddened when taggers ruin property such as the historic Berlin wall. What a wonderful experience you are having. I just came home from the hospital, I had lost over 50% of my body’s blood and I had a pulmonary embolism. I am fine now. I came home Tuesday night. Take care!
